The history behind the mission
Most people recognize a guide dog. Few know the story behind them.
After World War I, guide dogs were first trained to help blinded veterans regain their independence. Years later, retired machinist Joseph Jones, Sr. was denied a guide dog because he was considered too old.
Instead of accepting that answer, he worked with the International Association of Machinists to create what became Guide Dogs of America so others would never be turned away for the same reason.
That same spirit continues today through this tournament.
Why it matters
Dogs helped blinded veterans regain confidence, mobility, and independence.
